Lubrizol® 86GR is the latest generation of calcium sulfonate technology for manufacturing water-resistant greases. As a modified 400 TBN overbased calcium synthetic sulfonate, Lubrizol 86GR converts into a gel in two to three hours, without the addition of other acids or bases. This stable chemistry gels predictably, requiring only the addition of water in a robust procedure, for faster, reproducible batch processing.
Traditional lithium-based greases use a fatty acid (or a diacid for more complex greases), along with a lithium base and additive enhancements to achieve desired performance levels. At high temperatures, such greases can lose their structure, with the oil separating out from the thickener. The temperature at which separation occurs is known as the dropping point.
